No Matter the Weather

It just started to get reeeaaally nice where we live. 75 degrees, sunny skies, very little wind. Today we went to a “Teddy Bear Picnic” fundraiser in Incline and soaked up all the sun. It makes it a little harder to leave, knowing that we are leaving Summer and headed right back into winter (we start in Cusco which is in the Southern Hemisphere). Fortunately, winter is Cusco’s best season and it is relatively mild and dry. Here is the 10-day forecast for both Carson City and Cusco:

Carson City, NV:

Cusco, Peru:

It is about 10 degrees cooler in Cusco than here…which actually makes it nearly the same temperature as South Lake Tahoe. Summer is the rainy season in Cusco, from November to April, so we are happy to arrive when we do. We based our itinerary on the seasons once we decided when we’d be leaving. In the original plan we were going to leave on January 1st, 2023, and then we were going to start down in Patagonia and work our way up. As we have it planned, we will be in Cusco for Winter, La Paz for Spring, Patagonia for Summer (much preferred) and then Central America for another Spring. Basically, we miss Fall this year…which if you ask my kids or my husband, is actually a real tragedy and something we’ll have to make up for by going ALL OUT in Fall 2023.

So there you have it…it SHOULD be mostly mild weather in our future. It can get very cold at night up at elevation (Cusco is at 11,152 ft and La Paz is at 11,893 ft) so we are packing lots of layers and cold weather items, but we are hoping for some nice warm days too, especially when we make our way to Central America next Spring. There will be a packing list post coming soon so stay tuned!
